Introduction and Objectives
Hi everyone, and welcome to this course on the State of Accessible Housing in the USA. I'm your host, Sarah Pruett. We've put together this course to help educate you about universal design, and the need for it in our communities. We're glad you're here, and we hope you learn something new.
Welcome! I'm Sarah, occupational therapist and program director at The Universal Design Project. I'm excited you've chosen to join me today. Often, the topic of home accessibility gets put on hold until there's an immediate need, but we think it's something that everyone needs to pay more attention to. So, that's why we created this course. I promise to make this semi-interesting, so I hope you'll stick around until the end.
Some barriers can force someone's life to come to a screeching halt because of a disability. The effects of enough encounters with barriers are detrimental to one's ability to feel safe, comfortable, and successful.
Barriers that exist for some people may be completely invisible, unless you know what to look for. I'm here to take you through the topic of the state of accessible housing in the USA. Suppose you're coming here with some knowledge of the need for accessible homes, or you're just curious about the topic. In that case, I'm excited to introduce you to some of the concepts and help you understand this sometimes seemingly unrelatable topic.
This course is designed in a way that you can watch individual videos of the content at your own pace, video by video, and you can even check off each lesson after you complete it to keep track of your progress. I will guide you to do that after each lesson. If you're really getting into a groove, you can binge watch the course in one sitting as well.
After you've finished this course, you'll have a better understanding about how the lack of accessible housing affects people in the community, the benefits of universally accessible homes for people in the community of all ages and abilities, the difference between home modification and universal design, the effect housing has on other aspects of life, and the common issues people may experience in and around their homes.
Each of these concepts will be covered in individual videos, so you can go back and re-watch or address important information later. I'll also touch on how a home designed to be a good fit impacts how people participate in their communities.
There's a lot to cover, so grab your favorite drink and let's get started!
